The name Banke Kuku has become synonymous with Nigerian high fashion, but the eponymous founder wants her brand to be known for something other than its bright, breezy, bold aesthetic. Her latest collection, Oceans, does exactly that: while staying true to the Banke Kuku aesthetic, its design — inspired by the ocean — aims to draw the mind towards our marine ecosystem and remind us of our duty to preserve it for future generations.
“With Oceans, I wanted to bring attention to the vast beauty of our marine ecosystems and the urgent need for their protection. Our oceans are vital to life on Earth, and through fashion, I hope to spark a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the natural world,” Banke Kuku shared during an exclusive press conference. “Fashion is a powerful storytelling tool, and I want to use my designs to create awareness and inspire positive action.”
Actually, Oceans is not Banke Kuku’s first nature-inspired collection. Per an earlier interview this year, the Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Design-trained designer explained that her designs are often inspired by nature. This is evident, not only in her 2023 Eden collection which was an ode to the beauty of the earth’s flora but also in unique pieces that have debuted over the years like the Ladybug gown, the White Hibiscus open-back shirt set or the Hibiscus shirt dress. But for Banke, nature is more than an inspiration for fashion: the brand is a member of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, and, as part of its commitment to its growth and sustenance, a percentage of its profits go to the foundation.
Oceans by Banke Kuku reflects the sea’s diverse shades, textures, and movements. From fluid silhouettes that mimic the ebb and flow of ocean waves to deep blues and seafoam greens that evoke the serenity and depth of marine life, each piece tells a story of the ocean’s grace and fragility. As always, the designer incorporates elements that celebrate African heritage, infusing traditional patterns with a contemporary flair.
The collection dropped officially on October 18, 2024, in a star-studded event at the Royal Box Centre at Cube 35 by Mikano Ltd. Available pieces can be preordered now on the brand’s official website.
