“The clothes are simple, but with the concept of simplicity as an antidote to useless complication.” That was Miuccia Prada riffing on her pared-down menswear collection for spring 2021, but the idea resonates with her new Adidas collaboration.
Following the first release of an all-white Prada Superstar, the Italian fashion house and Adidas have teamed up on a second drop, a subtle take on the original unisex sneaker created by Adidas in 1969. It is so subtle that you might mistake it for an un-Pradafied sneaker—well, at least if you didn’t touch it and feel that this Superstar was handmade of buttery leather in Prada’s Marche region workshops.
Comprising three more colourways: monochrome black, white with black, and chrome silver with white, the Prada Superstar will be sold individually, without the addition of the Prada bowling bag, as was the case with the first release. It will be available at Prada and Adidas stores, as well as select retailers from September 8.
In addition to announcing this drop, Prada and Adidas have hinted towards the next chapter in their ongoing partnership. The announcement reveals that the next drop will be linked to the America’s Cup, the premier sailing competition in the world, and one with which Prada has a long and deep history, having founded the Luna Rossa sailing team in 1997. The cup’s namesake sneaker is also one of Prada’s most iconic footwear designs, dominating the early aughts and starting a luxury sneaker craze.
