In February this year, Vogue Talents, in collaboration with African Fashion Foundation (AFF) and with the support of IFFAC launched Scouting for Africa 2020 project to support and promote African designers living on the continent and elsewhere. After reviewing numerous applications, two winners have emerged: Emmy Kasbit from Nigeria and Rich Mnisi from South Africa.
Emmanuel Okoro is the founder of Emmy Kasbit which was established in 2014 with the idea of drawing on the past as a constant inspiration in his work. Hence the sartorial approach that defines most of his creations is perfectly combined with the techniques of local craftworkers using indigenous fabrics to create modern pieces.
Rich Mnisi is the founder of the eponymous brand born in 2015. His designs fuse the African heritage with modern global culture, uniting extreme silhouettes with a minimalistic approach influenced by references to pop culture. His garments are produced by local women who further infuse them with their skills, including upcycling techniques.
Both winners will have the opportunity to showcase their collections during the upcoming digital Milan Fashion Week this September.
