Using composites manufacturing and 3D printing, Arevo, a Silicon Valley-based company has introduced the world’s first 3D-printed unibody electric bike. The bike, Superstrata, is available in two variants – the Superstrata Classic is the non-electric version that can be customized for a variety of riding styles, and the Superstrata Electric, a Class 1 e-bike with a rear-hub 250W motor and a 252Wh battery that can go for 60miles on a single charge.
The unique feature of the Superstrata bikes is their unibody thermoplastic carbon fibre frames. They are manufactured as one single continuous piece rather than separate parts welded together. This causes them to not only be lightweight but also extremely impact-resistant. Classic’s frame weighs only 2.8 lbs while the Electric’s frame tips the scale at 24.2 lbs.
Speaking on the bikes, Superstrata’s CEO, Sunny Vu, explained that the process used in creating them gives the added benefit of making bespoke bikes that can be custom-fitted for each customer, allowing for up to 500,000 variations of the unibody frame. All buyers need to do is provide their measurements and the company will 3D-print the bike down to the spokes to fit their size and body form.
Both bikes are available for pre-order on Indiegogo
